User Accounts
I'm not sure whether my partner's PC has a some kind of trojan virus or that
she has been deleting various user accounts but she now finds she can't log
on to XP at all.

What happens is that she enters her usual password and for a few seconds it
looks as if XP is going to log her on. But then it goes back to the "Welcome"
screen and automatically logs her off.

We have tried the other accounts on her machine (one of which is admin) but
the same happens with them.

I've tried to get round this via Safe Mode, but again the same happens.

I'm thinking that perhaps the only way round this is a complete reinstall of
XP home. But how can I install it if I can't get into XP in the first place,
or get a DOS prompt?

Any help would be gratefully received

Re: User Accounts
This is often the result of running AdAware:

Boot with the XP CD (assuming you have a retail version, and not an OEM =
"Recovery" CD). Begin Setup. You'll be given the option to Repair an =
existing installation. Select this option. This takes you into =
Recovery Console. You'll be prompted for the Administrator password. =
If there is a password on this account, you will need to remember it. =
This is not the password for any "administrator" level account, it is =
the password for THE Administrator account.

Once in the Recovery Console, enter the following commands:

CD System32
COPY USERINIT.EXE WSAUPDATER.EXE

Reboot the computer. You should now be able to log on. Once you have, =
click Start, run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Look in the right pane for the Userinit value. Double click the =
Userinit value and change it to C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe, =
The comma on the end is intentional, and it must be there. Now, if =
desired, you can delete the WSAUPDATER.EXE copy that you created.

What if I forgot the Adminsitrator password? I think I forgot it, and I have the same problem of auto logoff.

Please help, thanks.

Hi

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

The system in the link above can reset the Administrator
password offline.

and this as well from the link above:

Newsflash at 2004-01-16:

Support for easy change of RecoveryConsole parameters (one of
them tells RecoveryConsole to NOT ask for admin password).
