Windows 2000 DNS problem - AGAIN!
Hi all! I've been stuck with this problem for too long now! I've probably read +- 100 or more forum topics and support sites, but they all give the same advice, which works on some points but it doesnt fix my problem!

Ok. I have 3 Win2k Servers on the network. Server1 is the DNS, ISA, file and exchange server. Server2 and Server3 are standalone. What happened was that our Server1 had to be reloaded (various reasons). We then replicated EVERYTHING to Server3. This was running the network, but was very slow. We then did a clean install on Server1, complete with a rebuilt AD and all. Before this happened, we couldnt dcpromo Server1 off. We eventually sorted that out (kinda) but it was still showing in the AD on Server3. After plenty of hours, we eventually got it off (manually). Then we dcpromo'd Server3 off, which worked.

We then put Server1 on the network with the new AD and Exchange, changed the workstations and everything seems to be hunky dory. Now my problem - Server3 is now standalone, but we want it back on the network as a DC. We actually forgot to uninstall Exchange2000, so we had to DCpromo it back to get AD(not on our new network though, dummy domain was set up), but yet still exchange wouldnt uninstall....

first, look at this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q260378

after you've done those, then do this:

on the LIVE network, run adsiedit.msc
navigate all the way to Configuration -> Services -> Microsoft
Exchange ->Your Exchange Org Name ->Administrative Groups -> Your Admin
Group containing the Server ->Servers -> Server3

Right-click on Server3 (if you see it) and click delete.

Close Adsiedit.

Re: Re: Windows 2000 DNS problem - AGAIN!
Fix this forum some1..I tried to reply to my own msg,coz I wasnt finished with the post, but it just put replied with the original + trying to submit a txt, but it wont let me either!!!!!!

ANYWAY - like I was saying, I then removed exchange manually,it worked except that it still shows in add/remove,dcpromo'd the box off again, changed the network properties and got it on our new domain. NOW MY PROBLEM: The dcpromo 2 make it a DC cant contact the server. I take it that from the multitude of posts, its DNS. Ive used EVERYTHING, incl. netdiag,dcdiag,nslookup,ipconfig...which helped abit. The nslookup coulnt find the server, but after alot of trouble, got that to report positive. But netdiag STILL give the RCODE_SERVER_FAILURE.Ive included a netdiag from server1 and server3. Strange thing: When dcpromo,it asks 4 credentials-username,password,domain. Domain is populated with "domain.local",but it wont let me continue.IF I remove ".local",it continues. Nxt step, same thing - wont work with populated dns name, but if I remove the ".local",it continues! Go through the rest of the boxes, bit as soon as the process starts, it kick me out. WTF!? Ive seen my dcpromo problem EVERYWHERE on the net,but no-one seems to have a solution. Please HELP! (PS:Sorry bout the confusion with the posts, wasnt my fault...)

When you look in AD Users & Computers, what does it say your domain name is?
Can you post an ipconfig /all for the DC?
Also, list the name of Forward Lookup zones in DNS.

Re: Re: Windows 2000 DNS problem - AGAIN!
Hi there! Dont worry, fixed the problem. The dns name on our dns server was pointing to server1.domain.local... it shouldve pointed to domain.local.

That sorted everything out. Its when you add the forward lookup zone...but thanks anyway.

Sorry bout that!

Cheers
