Windows Explorer virus???
I have a problem with Windows Explorer running on XP professional. After a while (I can't figure out what triggers it) Windows Explorer will have additional objects (not directories) attached to the bottom of the directory tree in the left window at which
point I cannot open my d drive. I am running ASP.NET and SQL Server on my machine. The anti-virus software eTrust Virus does not pick up any viruses and both the Windows updates and the antivirus updates are up to date.

Does anybody know what this is caused by?

Many Thanks
Uli

I can't picture this. What kind of additional objects are you seeing?
Try another scan at http://housecall.antivirus.com
Also might want to run spyware scans with AdAware and Spybot (free - google
them) - update before scanning, in both cases.

Re: Windows Explorer virus???
Hi, unfortunately I cannot send a screen dump, but basically in the window on the left-hand side of windows explorer containing the directory tree, instead of having folder icons there are a number of icons similar to the icons shown for files with an und
efined extension. In addition there are no names next to these icons.

Re: Windows Explorer virus???
I have scanned the computer with housecall antivirus software. I have run AdAware and removed the identified threats. However the problem still exists. I have also checked the drives for errors. Has anybody have any other ideas?

Do these entries show up in the right pane if you click on the drive in
the left pane (in other words are in the root directory)? If yes, what
data are in the 'Type', 'Size', 'Created', 'Modified', 'Accessed', and
'Attributes' column for the entry. Is the icon greyed out? I assume you
have 'display hidden files' enabled.

Is the D: drive a physical drive or a partition?

Is the file system NTFS, and is that the only file system?

Does the problem go away for a time when you restart the system?

Does the problem occur if you boot up, then don't use the system for a
period equal to the time it usually takes for the problem to appear, or
have the system do a couple of long, but simple proceedures that don't have
many variables (scan the drives for error, defrag the drives, and scan the
drives for virus infections)?

The above information may help the diagnosis, but your problem as described
seems like a question for the Windows XP operating system newsgroup and for
the Microsoft knowledge base section that deals with Windows XP.

Re: Windows Explorer virus???
No one cannot see the icons in the right hand window.

It is a partition.

There are two partitions. A C (10GByte) and D (30GByte) drive. The C drive is a NTFS and the D drive is FAT32.

When Windows Explorer is initially opened the D drive can be accessed and the additional icons are not present. After a while for reasons unknown the D drive cannot be accessed and the icons appear.

As long as the error has not occured, scanning the drive for errors returns no errors. Afterwards clicking (right or left) on the D drive results in no response. There are also no viruses on either drive when scanning with the latest update of eTrust Vi
rus.

What what information does the property sheet give about the objects in the
left panel?

Have you run disk utilities to check the condition of your hard drive?

The only thing I can suggest at this point is that your Windows installation
is corrupt, and needs to be repaired. I've never seen symptoms like yours.

Good luck.
