help with sata new winxp installation
I have a new asus k8v se mb with amd64 3200+. I placed a single new
(unformated or partitioned) sata drive in the primary sata plug. (not
the raid plugs) The bios sees the drive. when winsetup is done with
ide cdrom I push F6 to install the promise sata drivers for the board
(from the asus web site) but when it's all loaded it says it can't
find a hd to install winxp on and that's it.
Help. Do I have to partition this thing first with fdisk on a dos
floppy? I thought winxp would do all this. ( i want one partition (120
gb) and ntfs. will any fdisk do?
thanks,
Jack

Read the User's Guide that came with your ASUS motherboard.
Your SATA hard drive settings in the BIOS are not correct.

Re: help with sata new winxp installation
I have an ASUS P4S8X and had a similar problem.

First, the drivers must be on a floppy, not on a CD. Second, it is not
enough to have the drivers and INF file. You also need a file called
oemseup.txt, which I got from my ASUS CD.

But, before all this, be sure that the BIOS settings are set to boot from
the SATA drive. Some of the settings I have include: Advanced, PCI
Configuration, Onboard ATA device = enabled, onboard ATA device first = yes.
Also, Boot, other boot device = SCSI/onboard ATA.

Finally, the SATA controller on my ASUS motherboard is really a RAID
controller. I did not want RAID, neither mirror nor striped, but it
absolutely had to create at least one RAID array before things would work.
I was able to create a "custom" arrary containing just one SATA disk. I did
this using something called the promise Fast Track RAID Controller. This is
NOT part of the BIOS setup. To access this controller I have to hit CRL-F
after the power-on-testing is done. The motherboard manual did explain
this, somewhere around page 120 or so. Read your manual, all of it, twice.
Note that the RAID arary MUST be built BEFORE attempting to load XP, or XP
will not see the hard drive.

I also have an ASUS P4S8X. I just got a WD 250 Gb SATA drive. Thank you for your helpful advice! I'll make sure to check all of those BIOS settings.

Can you tell me where to find the drivers that I will need to put on a floppy? I have been looking everywhere for them.

Thanks.
