Certain Pages will not load
Hello all. I have read this forum, and I have attempted
all posted resolutions, to no avail. Here is the issue:

Using IE 6, SP1, with Windows XP SP1, FULLY UPDATED, with
Norton Internet Security, I cannot access webpages such
as http://www.angelfire.com/login.shtml or
http://osap.gov.on.ca

When I try to access those pages, I receive a "Page
Cannot be Displayed" Error.

However, if I use another computer in the house, on the
same network, I can access the page with no problems.

I have removed all Spyware from the computer, using
AdAware, CWShedder and Hijackthis, to no avail. I have
formatted the computer, re-installed the OS, completely
updated it, to no avail. I have appled the new Security
Update for Internet Explorer Fix Q832894, to no avail. I
have disabled, and even uninstalled Norton, to no avail.

I have exhausted all options that I can think of. Any
further suggestions?

Read this article and if applicable try the tool.

The Syntax and Options for Using the Ipconfig Diagnostic Utility for Network
Connections

It may be a HOSTS file problem.
Look also for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS.

If you did not create the file, then you may have parasites, or you are
using a web accelerator program that would be causing this problem.

Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.

Re: Certain Pages will not load
As stated earlier, there are no spyware, adware, or
hijack programs on this computer.

Also, your fix did not work.

Any further suggestions?

Re: Certain Pages will not load
Hi Everyone!

I have the exact same problem, except I am using Windows 2000 Pro. I did have a trojan three weeks ago which I got rid of by running many of the suggested programs (Ad-aware, Spybot, HiJackThis, Spyware Blaster, Pest Patrol). But after this I have tried running every patch and registry cleaning program I can find (all mentioned here and in other forums) which show my computer is clean but I still can not access certain sites. I have noticed that it seems to be sites I have visited in the past, yet I have eliminated ALL traces of cookies, cache, hosts, and history that I am aware of. Even reinstalling IE did not help, but I prefer using Mozilla Firefox which has the same problem.

I also find the same thing, two other computers on my home network have no problem what-so-ever, so I know it has to be something that got changed when I eliminated the trojan on this computer. Yes, I even uninstalled and reinstalled the network adapter (three times).

Any other suggestions? I have spent a lot of time an energy trying to figure out this problem! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Ultraflyer

Re: Certain Pages will not load
I ran across the same problem problem at a
small business. Some computers got to all of the websites and some computers would give the "Page could not be displayed" error on a few sites. Turned out they were
using 2 seperate routers, all of the computers with the problem were going through an ActionTech R1520SU. Updating the firmware in the router solved the problem. You probably don't have 2 routers
in your house but maybe this will give you
a new troubleshooting path to look at.

Re: Re: Certain Pages will not load
Hi Henri!

Thanks for the response, but I have tried releasing and renewing the IP address and this doesn't change the sites I can reach and not reach. Also, I have only one router, so this doesn't appear to be an issure since two other computers work fine. I did try to disconnect the router and going directly into the cable modem, but again, this did not solve the problem.

Any other suggestions? It almost seems like there is a file that has the names and/or addresses of sites I've visited in the past in it that prevents me from accessing these sites (microsoft's site is one of them). But I know it's not the HOSTS or LMHOSTS files. Again, I emptied the cahce, history, cookies, and 'Downloaded Program Files' files to be sure they weren't the cause. Any others I sould look for?

I'm willing to try anything short of formating and reinstalling.

Thanks for your help.
Dave

Re: Certain Pages will not load
What is running at startup.
Run MSCONFIG from the start/run applet and compare the unknown processes
against this database.

Check this list.
START-UP APPLICATIONS

See if some of the experts here have some recommendations.

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware] or download direct (below):
http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

If you get a 404 error or Access denied, try:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo....hijackthis.zip

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates "hijackthis.log")

Next, HijackThis | Config [button] | Misc Tools [button]
Click: Generate StartupList log [button] (generates "startuplist.txt")

Next, go to the below location:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/

Sign in, then copy and paste both files in your message.
