Administrator has restricted this computer to access USB/1394 mass storage drives
Hello.

I recently purchased an Acer workstation with Windows XP SP2 installed on
it. After adding it to the domain, I cant access the CD/DVD drive or any USB
drives that I try to connect to it. I can't install any software either. I
keep getting messages like the one of the subject of this post, and I am
logged on to the computer as administrator.

I appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks,
Odracir

Exact same machine, exact same problem, (almost exact same time problem started). Also logged on as Administrator. It worked alright when I got the PC but about six weeks later the problem started.

All I have found so far is under Device Manager, USB Controllers - one of the USB Root Hubs has no value in the Device Usage fields. Usually this would be either enabled or disabled.

Problem solved
A function called Acer Lanscope has an icon on the bottom line. This offers the information that USB storage devices, Cds, DVDs etc were all 'locked'. I could find no way of accessing this program to change the settings so uninstalled the function via Add or Remove programs option in Control Panel which solved the problem.

Re: Administrator has restricted this computer to access USB/1394 mass storage drives
It turns out that Acers ship with an utility called Acer lanScope that
sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. I have two identical machines, one
is working fine and the other one is giving me the problem above. If you
look on your tray there is an icon for lanScope Agent, and if you click on
it, it will give you the information that will show that all your devices
are locked. Supposedly you should be able to control these settings using
the Acer eLock utility, but I couldn't change the settings so I had to
uninstall the lanScope application and disable all the services for the Acer
applications, namely the Memcheck and the Lock something something (sorry, I
don't remember the full name)

OEMs should stop loading their machines with their utilities. Windows works
fine when alone.

After I uninstalled the lanScope agent I was able to access devices again.

Reg,
Odracir.

planetbarbecue had exact same problem, 6 weeks and then no access to mass storage device. Than you so much for the advice, it worked! when I removed Acer lanScope in add/remove programs I had access again.
Pity I spent about 6 hours trying sort it our before I found your answer.

I did call into PC World where I purchased this acer computer and they said they had never had this problem with the PC's before. Now I do believe they may be hundreds of people out there with no access to mass strorage device's after 6 weeks of purchase.

Thanks again

It Worked !!!
AcerPower M8 PC running XP

I can not thank you all enough.
I spent ages on this looking through windows profiles and registry settings.
It was all working a few weeks ago and has done since I bought the computer
last Christmas, and then I tried to plug my new camera into the USB port last
weekend and I started getting these
"administrator has resticted access to your USB/3xxx port" and
"administrator has resticted access to your CD/DVD ROM drivers". messages
Maybe something to do with a recent windows security patch that started this off?

Anyway removing LANScope agent from add/remove programs and a re-boot did the trick.

I also noticed a few weeks ago that the packaged NTI CD and DVD-Maker stopped working.
Just displayed the splash screen and dissapeared. This now works again as well.

Fantastic and thanks again to whoever found out the cause.
