I have recently started to monitor the bandwidth on the internal NIC of my

2000 Server.  I found that the bandwidth is at 100 constantly.  I have also

noticed when accessing the server internally or from a VPN, that it is fairly

slow.  Can the Windows Performance Monitor be trusted?  If so, what should I

do to resolve this problem.  If not, is there an 3rd part application that

would do the same thing so that I can get a "second opinion?

The performance monitoring tools are usually good and I have never seen a

problem.  The question then is: what do you use this server for?  If it is a

DC this is indicative of something being horribly wrong.  If it is serving

streaming video then it is completely likely...  see my point.



Also, you say that it is "slow" when you connect to it...  what does that

mean?  Connect to it how?

we only use this server for one database, it's called MAS.  However, it's a

faily large database. The only thing is, is that the usuage is still at 100

when no one is in the office using the database, so it doesn't make sense.



I mean slow, if an employee opens a VPN into the server using the same

databse application, it runs very slow.

are you using the network interface/current bandwidth counter?  I have never seen this counter different than 100.  This does not mean you are using 100% of your bandwidth.  Read the explaination on the counter in perfmon.

This would explain why at 100 when no one is on.



Packets sent and recieved are better counters to use.



If you do have a bandwidth issue consider the following



1. go up to gigabit copper with a gigabit card in the server and a switch to support gig-e

2. consider teaming two 100mb cards to create a bandwidth of 400mbps.  Intel nic have this feature and the software from Intel is free.

3. review your topology.  Recommended setup is a high end backbone switch.  It connects the servers and any down line devices like other switches.  Eliminate any switch to switch to switch connections.  Backbone to switch only.  Best for bandwidth.

Yeah, I am using interface/current bandwidth counter.



Well, I added the counters packets send and received, and they are both

below 10.  So does this mean I'm OK?
