Need help to remove spyware
I've been trying to clean out my computer and found a program called "My
Search Bar" in my list of programs. I tried to remove it using the Add/Remove
utility but everytime I hit Remove a blank window pops up with the following
header:
res://C:\PROGRA~1\MYWAY\MYBAR\1.BIN\mybar.dll/101

I know this is spyware but don't know what I need to do to remove it
completely from my system. I have run both Spybot and Adaware but neither
found it. I just happened to see it when I was removing old, unused programs.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

Monica

Re: Need help to remove spyware
I have version 6.0. Latest reference file is 01R347 26.10.2004, but when I
check for updates it says there are no recent updates available. Should I
re-install?

Re: Need help to remove spyware
That's what I thought. Adaware 6 is no longer supported nor updated. You need Adaware SE
v1.05 which is the latest and is the supported version.

1) Download the following three items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend signature files.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download SYSCLEAN.COM and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt325.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
SYSCLEAN.COM.

2) Update Adaware with the latest definitions.
3) If you are using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDoc...SysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode and shutdown as many applications as possible.
5) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
7) If you are using WinME or WinXP,Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) If you are using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point

* * * Please report back your results * * *

Re: Need help to remove spyware

I did all you suggested. Sysclean found one virus which I removed. I ran my
anti-virus program afterward and it didn't find anything. Ad-aware only found
two tracking cookies which I deleted. When I go into Add/Remove programs the
'My Search Bar' is still there and it keeps doing the same thing.

Re: Need help to remove spyware
The entry in the control panel applet "add/remove applications" won't necessarily remove the
toolbar line item. However Adaware should remove the software and Registry changes. Did
you update the software with the LATEST definitions and run it in Safe Mode ?

Yes, I updated version of Ad-aware and updated it. I followed the
instructions in your previous post line by line, including running it in Safe
Mode.
