Add words in BULK to custom dictionary
Does anybody out there know how to do the above in Word 2002.

I can obviously do it a single word at a time but I'd like to be finished by
the end of the year!! Is there a limit BTW on the amount of words one can
import?

TIA

Geoff

Re: Add words in BULK to custom dictionary
You asked the same question in microsoft.public.word.general and I answered it there. Here is a copy of that reply.

To add to your custom dictionary try the following. Only remember that
it depends which version you have how large a dictionary you can build.
If it is Word 97 the limit is about 5000 word, while Word 2003 does
not seem to have any limits. I d not know about the other versions.

Depending on how many words you want to add and the source for the words
you could try the following. On the internet do a search and see
whether you can find a word list. That would be a list that has only
one word per line. If you cannot find such a list find as many articles
as you can and copy to Word as one big file. Get rid of any unwanted
objects e.g. clipart, photos, etc..

Highlight the whole file (Ctrl -A) and go to Edit/Replace/More/Special.
In the "Replace with" field choose the first choice - paragraph mark.
In the "find what" field ad any of the other characters you what to
replace. That would be some or all of the following. space, coma,
period, ?,<>!%&$#+ depending on what you find in the article. Then
Replace all. You should now have a file that has one word per line
several pages long. What you will notice is that there is many
duplicate words. Don't worry about it.

Find your custom dictionary if English is your language or create one of
your own. Open the file in Notepad and NOT in Word. Back to Word,
highlight the wordlist and copy (Ctrl-C) go to Notepad and paste the
wordlist. Save and close the new dictionary.

If it a new custom dictionary with a name other than CUSTOM go to
Option\Spelling & Grammar\Dictionaries and add it to the list and make
it default for this exercise.

Do a spell check on the wordlist in Word. There should be no errors.
Create one by deleting or adding one character and do another spell
check. Add the error to the list

Return to Notepad and open the new dictionary. You will notice that the
list is alphabetical and there is no duplicate words. Find the error
and change it back to the correct word. Keep on adding words that way
if you find more articles with words you do not have. This is ideal for
people with special needs like engineers , scientist where it is
difficult to find a dictionary.

You can now change the default if needed or leave as is, as you can have
more that one default, one for every language.

Hope it helps.

Hennie

Basically, you can simply open the *.dic file in Word (it's a plain text
file), carefully enter the words (one per line), sort them alphabetically and
save (still as a plain text file).

You don't need to sort it.

Thanks. <sigh> Couldn't remember whether one did, or not,
so thought it safer to do so...
