Windows 2000 SP4, Office 2003, RHD 1.1



Any known reasons why the RHD tool won't install properly on this system?



When I open an Office product after attempting to install the tool I get the

message that it did not install correctly and I should try again.  It never

works.

The RHD utility was designed for Word 2002/2003. I'm surprised it

allowed you to install it. You should have encountered a message along

the lines of "Incorrect version". Do you have another version of

Office installed?



In any event, it can't be used with Office 2000.

Possibly a permissions issue? Try installing as the Administrator.

Of course, I assumed you have to be an admin to install software.  I tried

using my domain admin ID to install it.  When that failed I put the user in

the local admin group and tried it.  That failed, too.  I did not try using

the built-in administrator ID, though.

Whoops! Sorry Tom, I saw "2000" and missed the "Windows" part. (Guess

that explains why I couldn't figure out why it allowed you to install

in the first place. lol)



I'm not sure why you are unable to install it since the installation

is fairly simple.



Did you disable your virus scanner and exit all applications? What is

the exact error message you are encountering? Do you have any

applications from a previous version of Office installed?

Yes, I did disable the virus scanner and exited everything else.  This is an

upgrade installation from Office 2000 to Office 2003.  The upgrade removed

all the previous versions.  The message is so generic it's lame.  All it

says is there's a problem and I should try reinstalling.



This PC does have something unique, though.  He's got a customized AutoExec

macro running in Word to display a small departmental menu.  Does RHD update

the AutoExec during a normal install?  Could that be stopping it?

When Word it does utilize an AutoExec macro which adds "rhd.dot" as a

global template (all it contains is a customized menu bar which

integrates  the Remove Hidden Data command under the File menu. So

since you previously indicated you encounter the error when you start

an Office app I'd say the actual installation was successful but

you're encountering the error when it attempts to manually add the

global template.



I'm happy to try and troubleshoot this issue with you but it make take

a day or so to determine the underlying problem.



First verify you have "rhd.dot" is located in:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Remove Hidden Data Tool



I'm not 100% certain but I suspect this location is hard coded in the

DLL.



If the file is present then see what happens if you manually load it:



- Go to Tools/Templates and Add-ins

- Click the "Add..." command

- Navigate to the folder for "rhd.dot" and select it



Then open a document and try using the File/Remove Hidden Data

command.



Let me know what you encounter and we'll go from there. :-)

In addition to Beth's comments you can run

the tool from a command line in Start=>Run.

More information on that is in the Readme .htm

file in



<drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Remove Hidden Data Tool\1033\offrhdreadme.htm



If you have Winzip (or equivalent) you can right click

on the RHDTool.exe download and choose 'open with Winzip'

and inside that archive open RHD.CAB to get to the .htm

readme file and manually extract the files.



Are you using U.S. English (1033) as the default on

your system? Have you installed Service Pack 1 on Office 2003?

I'm having the same trouble.  I get a popup that says "An error occurred

while trying to launch the Remove Hidden Data Tool. Try reinstalling." only

when I start Word.



Virus and everything is also exited. I have the 2 auto exec files in the

add-in, but it does not install the add-in rhd.dot.  After I add it manually,

it doesn't remain once I click "OK" and finalize installation of the .dot



Another thing that I notice: I am unable to add the command "Remove Hidden

Data..." in the file menu - because it doesn't even appear as an option in

the command list.  I think that this problem is ultimately related to this

issue.
