LSASS.exe - System Error, "When trying to update a password..."
A very strange (and painful) problem happened to us today. The server
rebooted itself today without any apparent reason. Now, after the server
boots and gets to the windows screen (before preparing network connections) I
almost immediately get the above error message with an "OK" button. Within a
few seconds, the server reboots itself

The error message in full says:

"LSASS.EXE - System Error"
"When trying to update a password, the return status indicates the value
provided as the current password is not correct"

This has us complely dead in the water. Any suggestions on what I can do?

Assistance is greatly appreciated...

RE: LSASS.exe - System Error, "When trying to update a password..."
Hi Jonathon

I have also been through this painful and annoying experience.
The error appeared on my SBS2003 box just after i'd installed exchange SP1.

The result of my error, was that I had to re-install SBS2003, as repairing
the system hive didnt help.

I sysprepped my server and that was the only thing I had done differently to
a normal installation.

Here is the kind reply I received from James Fredrickson, MSFT.
"Hi

Sysprep is not why this error came about. When you replace the system file
(hive) from the repair folder is when you got the lsass error. You could
boot into Directory Restore mode. The best thing to do would be to not use
the one from the repair folder as that hive is from the original install
before the components were installed. thus the error

I am not sure why you were getting the corrupt system hive error, this
usually comes from a dirty shutdown or something of that nature.

I hope that any of this info provides you with a starting point for your
server.

Regards,
Ryan.

Check for the sasser virus. Check MS website, they have detector/remover
tool, as do most AV sites.

Re: Re: LSASS.exe - System Error, "When trying to update a password..."
i was able to correct this issue by using erd commander and running a system restore point

if system restore had been disabled a clean install would have been the only option

i hope this helps
