Inbound mails sometimes refused with "550 5.7.1"
I have only one Exchange2k server. Approximately since two=20
weeks ago it started rejecting inbound traffic from=20
several domains. The NDR message the sender receives is=20
regularly similar to the following: "550 5.7.1. Requested=20
action not taken: message refused". The situation not=20
always replicates the same, as mails, previously accepted,=20
become rejected and after a while (not always, but=20
sometimes) become accepted. Nothing has changed at the=20
server ever since. There are two related articles=20
(KB288593 and KB323669) that might probably be connected=20
to the problem, however I=B4m still not pretty sure they=20
apply and even doubtfully about what should I do,=20
especially regarding kb288593, which doesn=B4t clearly=20
states "how to" steps in the resolution.
thanks in advance. Marcelo.

Hello Marcelo,

Can you reply with the complete text of a sample NDR than external
recipients receive when they send to you, there is normally some more
information before the 550. In the NDR is it your server name issuing the
NDR? First thing to check on the SMTP virtual server Access tab is the
Authentication and Connection subbuttons. Is anything set other than
default, if so what? Also what is between yourself and the internet? If
you can get the problem to reproduce, it would be very useful to have a
netmon trace of the problem or at a minimum SMTP protocol logging on the
Virtual Server to see more of what is going on in the SMTP conversation.

Re: RE: Inbound mails sometimes refused with "550 5.7.1"
I've got the same probleme than Marcelo. My server accept all of the mail except for one person. The error message is receive is...

550 5.7.1 Requested Action not taken: message refused (in reply to end of data command).

Here's what I've found in log

2004-10-14 13:08:24 192.26.210.2 peppermint.risq.qc.ca SMTPSVC1 SI-WIN1 205.237.80.34 0 EHLO +peppermint.risq.qc.ca 250 322 26 0

SMTPSVC1 SI-WIN1 205.237.80.34 0 QUIT peppermint.risq.qc.ca 240 0 4 0

If you look well, you will see that the DATA block is missing.. What appened? I have no filter on my exchange 2003 server... What's the problem... ???

Thank's

Martin

Re: Re: RE: Inbound mails sometimes refused with "550 5.7.1"
We had the exact same problem and found out that the local antivirus had been upgraded and was now scanning all email coming in on port 25. This randomly caused our exchange server deny email with the error code you reported. We disabled the local antiviruses internet email auto protect feature and the problem was resolved.

Hope this helps you,

Scott
