Network server Internet access icon & warning message with SP2
I am a home PC user (not on a network) running Win XP-Pro
(Ver. 5.1.2600). I have a DSL connection to the
Internet. Normally, when I conenct to the Internet, a
connection icon appears on the taskbar at the lower right
(where date/time info, etc. live).

I downloaded and installed SP2, after which a second
Internet connection icon appeared and took up residence
there permanently (whether I was on-line or not
connected). This second Internet connection icon had a
red x in it (indicating a problem), and the message that
appeared when I moved my cursor over it indicated that my
network connection to the Internet might be too slow or
not there. Right clicking this icon gave me the option
to fix this problem or to disable it. Since this new
icon was essentially irrelevant, I ignored it for a
while, but eventually succombed to the temptation to try
to get rid of it. I right-clicked the icon and selected
the "disable" option. Bad thing to do, apparently. From
that point forward my normal Internet connection no
longer worked. Whenever I clicked on my connect icon,
instead of getting a message indicating that my username
and password were being verified, I got a new message
indicating that I could not establish connection through
WAN miniport PPOE. It was at this point that I concluded
that I was receiving much benefit from SP2, so I ran my
system restore program to re-set my configuration as of
earlier in the day (pre SP2 download), thereby removing
SP2. Things are now back to normal and my Internet
access is fine (as you can tell by this communication).

My questions are: 1) What the heck was that second
Internet connection icon doing there when I am not a
nework user? and 2) What is a non-networked home PC user
supposed to do with this irrelevant but annoyingly
present icon after installing SP2 to get rid of it (or at
least hide it away where is is not able to interfere with
my life)?

Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

do the following, where it says "notify me when this connection has limited or no activity" unclick that box and then hit ok. the 2nd icon will then vanish.
