Change of motherboard on XP Home system

I do not know if this is the right place to post this. If
not please kindly advise where to post this..

It all started when I decided to replace the motherboard in
my XP Pro PC at home. Same brand of motherboard just faster
processor and bus speed. Took about 15 minutes. System
came up and is working. Loaded the new drivers all is
fine.

My son has the 900MHz Pentium that had started to give him
problems. His PC is running XP Home. So, I swapped out his
motherboard with the one I replaced. Installed a new stick
of Ram = 256MBs. It would at least double his speed. I
reset the CMOS, & reassigned devices in CMOS. It boots up
to the black screen noting changes in hardware and suggests
loading "Last Known Good Session.." No matter what I
choose it will boot so far and suddenly reboot. There is
a black error screen but it pops by so fast I can not read
it.
The PC will boot up on the XP Home Edition CDROM and stay
up. I can use the recovery option to sign into the 40GB C:
drive.

Any suggestions on how to get around this problem? I would
hate to reload XP and request a new serial number again. I
did this once after we put in the 40GB HD.

Dennis:

You will need to re-install XP on your son's machine. You were lucky
with your machine in that the replacement MB was a close match to the
existing one.

Changing the MB is a major change for Operating System (OS) and in most
cases it does not work.
