I just got a new server to replace the FISMO DC in my network.

What would be the best steps.

I would install it as a second DC and then transfer the FSMO to it. Don't
forget to make it a GC as well, if all DCs are GCs there won't be a problem
regarding the IM.

But in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;255504
near the bottom of the first page I read "Note: Do not put the
Infrastructure Master role on the same domain controller as the global
catalog" - and have gone to great trouble not to do this during my frequent
re-installs.

Are you saying that this article is incorrect? Could you please clarify
this a bit more?? :-)

Thanks,
Cameron:-)

Jim,

Thanks, that what I thought. I moved the FSMO awhile ago, but for got what
I did is there a good reference point explaining the process? By the way
what's IM mean?

Cameron,

I do not know the article but the GC is on the current DC and I have had no
issues?

In short, you can have the IM on a GC in two scenarios:

1) If you have a single domain forest, there are no phantoms thus the IM has
nothing to do which makes it ok to have it on a GC.
2) If you have a multi domain forest and all DCs are GC, then again, the IM
has nothing to do which makes it ok to have it on a GC:
